Global Leadership Series: Merging Profits and Social Responsibility

Copy of Copy of Tales from the Top.png

Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2019
Registration and Networking: 11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Program: 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Location: The Westin Chicago River North, 320 N Dearborn St., Chicago, IL 60654
Speaker: Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International, Inc.
Moderator: Connie L. Lindsey, Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity & Inclusion, Northern Trust

In 2018, Fortune 500 companies generated $12.8 trillion in revenue. That’s a sum greater than the GDP of many developed countries, only behind the 2018 GDP of the US and China. At the same time, the latest data from the Edelman Trust Barometer shows that global consumers are expecting business to lead on social issues. Can a company be seen as more than its profits?

Whether driven by conscience or force of consumer expectations, corporations are attempting to take their civic responsibility seriously. But what will the next generation of corporate social responsibility look like?

Join us April 3rd for a conversation with Arne Sorenson, CEO of Marriott International, the world's largest hospitality chain, on the initiatives Marriott is taking to broaden its commitment to corporate social responsibility. From training employees to recognize signs of human trafficking, to installing panic buttons in its hotels to increase safety, to eliminating plastic straws at its restaurants, Marriott is continuously working to incorporate social responsibility into every aspect of the company’s business strategy.

The scale and speed of change in today’s marketplace is unprecedented – scary, even. We all know driving change through your organization is really tough, but the reality is that change is the new normal. As an organizational leader, you need to be an expert at leading and embedding change throughout your organization. Your professional future may even depend on it.

This is where things get fuzzy – what does great change actually look like? Well, it starts with your people. You need to enroll your people in executing a new strategic direction, transforming culture, or driving change – and that means creating an organizational movement.

While there are no shortcuts, there are tried and true accelerators. In this session, you’ll explore insights and practical methods to build your capabilities as a change leader and accelerate the desired change in your organization.

TEDx Chicago: No Limits!

We love the idea of “No Limits” because it contains an intrinsic contradiction. It both inspires us to say — “Wow, there are no limits to what we can do differently to move forward, inspire positive change, innovate and evolve.” But it also forces us to question the reality that there are many issues in our society relating to a LACK of limits (e.g., how we treat each other, how obsessed we are with technology/social media, how we abuse food/alcohol/drugs).

This event is open to the public.

At this program, we will also present The Club's Corporate Citizen of the Year award.
